Coming home to a sparkling house is a great feeling that is often hard to come by. With kids, playdates, or a part or full-time job, competing for our limited time, housekeeping can fall by the wayside. Here are some quick house cleaning tips and tricks to keep your home looking its best.

How to Keep the House Clean

    The Miracle of Microfiber

You can keep your home looking great with just a couple of inexpensive tools: microfiber cloths and vinegar.

Available at any supermarket or big box retailer, microfiber cloths will be your best friend in cleaning surfaces like counter tops, cabinets, appliances and tabletops. Just soak in hot water, wring out, and let the microfiber work its magic by picking up dirt, dust and food particles. Rinse and repeat as needed.

Spray surfaces with a one to four part vinegar and water solution to tackle stubborn sticky and greasy spots. The vinegar will loosen food particles and will also sanitize surfaces such as food prep areas and the kitchen sink and faucet where harmful germs lurk.

Sterilize your cloths daily by thoroughly wetting and then microwaving them on high for two minutes. Let cool and rinse before using again. Toss them in the wash after a couple of days to keep them in tip top shape.

Microfiber cloths are equally effective in cleaning bathroom surfaces and fixtures and can tackle soap scum on shower walls. Slightly dampen them to easily dust household surfaces. The microfiber will trap the dust particles rather than release them into the air like feather dusters. Spot treat carpet stains by spraying with vinegar solution. Let the solution sit for about five minutes and then gently blot the stain with a clean microfiber cloth. Repeat as necessary.

Keep your floors clean enough for baby to crawl on by mopping regularly with a microfiber mop head.

No harsh chemical are needed to bring out you floor’s shine. Just add a tablespoon of Borax to a bucket of hot water and mop for consistent results. If destroying allergens is a concern, consider investing in a steam mop.

Priced at about $100 for a basic model, reusable microfiber cloths attach to the mop head to deliver powerful steam to floors, quickly killing up to 99 percent of germs.

For use on kitchen, bathroom and hardwood floors, steam mops are a valuable time saver and well worth the investment.
